One-day workshops on Hand Paper Making and Batik coming up at the art studio of Grainstore, DLR`s Youth Arts Facility in Cabinteely Park, Dublin 18.

Both workshops are beginners courses and suit young people from 16 years of age and adults – limited places are available!

7 July (Saturday)
PAPER MAKING DAY Beginners – Suitable for YOUNG PEOPLE from 16 years of age and for ADULTS
10.30am – 1.15pm HAND PAPER MAKING – Introduction to traditional and contemporary techniques of making beautiful handmade papers from pure plant fibres of cotton and mulberry bush and a range of recycled materials.
Participants will learn about basic processes, pulp making, suitable materials and the use of plant fibre linters. Inclusions and decorative methods are also covered.
2.30 – 5pm SILK FIBRE PAPERMAKING – A truly fascinating, contemporary technique for making `fabric-like`, light weight, colourful silk papers using a selection of raw silk fibres and fabric dyes. Easy to continue and set up at home, this process is ideal to create unique interior decorations and striking silk papers for artworks, embroidery, collages…etc.

Fees (including all materials) for ADULTS: € 45 / per workshop
OR: € 80 / full day
For YOUNG PEOPLE: € 35 / per workshop OR € 55 / full day

21 July (Saturday)
10 am – 5.30 pm BATIK – Beginners
Introducing traditional and contemporary processes of Batik – an ancient fabric dyeing technique where hot wax is used as a resist on cloth. The workshop covers different wax applications (brush, Tjanting, stamp) and participants will work on small pieces applying two layers of wax and two colours.
Fee for adults (including all materials): € 80
Fee for YOUNG PEOPLE (incl. all materials): € 55

Participants with previous experience

This workshop covers a number of ideas, techniques and processes that can support Paper Art projects, collaborative works, installations, sculptural, 3-dimensional works, large scale pieces… etc. – using silk fibre paper making techniques. Participants will need some previous experience.

10.30 – 5.30pm BATIK – Suitable for BEGINNERS and PREVIOUS PARTICIPANTS

Ideal both for beginners and for those who have participated in previous introductory workshops, this course offers `project – work` and various techniques of traditional and contemporary processes of Batik – an ancient fabric dyeing technique where hot wax is used as a resist on cloth. The professional Batik studio set up offers different wax applications (brush, Tjanting, stamp) and there is an option to use water boilers to remove wax.

Participants are asked to start preparations (sketches) for two images/designs prior to the workshop. Further information will be provided.

This course is suitable for those with experience and/or their own artistic practice in areas of hand paper making and fibre arts. The workshop focuses on silk fibre paper making processes, three dimensional forms, plant fibre papers and Batik/Wax/Dye techniques on Handmade Papers.

Included are three dimensional/sculptural processes using paper making methods and materials – with an experimental approach. Ideal for those who previously participated in any of the Paper Making Day workshops – this course takes basics techniques further and offers guidance and advice. Bring your own questions, previous works, ideas!

11 June (Saturday): EMBROIDERY– Beginners
10.30am – 5pm

Tutor: ALEXIS BERNSTORFF, artistic director of the ROS TAPESTRY

This workshop will teach 6 principal stitches and their variations – using wool, cotton/silk and metallic threads. Participants will be inspired by a range of techniques to realise various designs. Alexis has 15 years experience teaching crewelwork embroidery and is the guide behind the dynamics of the Ros Tapestry.

The workshop introduces wet felting techniques using dyed and un-dyed Merino wool and silk fibre inclusions.

10.30am – 5.30pm Paper Making and Paper Art Follow-on Course – Advanced Level

Designed for participants who already work with paper/fibre based processes, this course offers assistance and guidance in areas of three dimensional, sculptural and installation based works, experimental processes of batik, wax based works on paper, paper dyeing and texturing. It also covers ideas for the preparation and use of plant based pulps (without added chemicals). Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas and questions into the workshop and invited to show and discuss previous works and projects.
