B A T I K  Techniques for Beginners at CREATIVE SPARK, Dudalk, Co. Louth

25th – 26th of May (Saturday – Sunday)

Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm each day

This course offers a thorough introduction to Batik: an ancient fabric dyeing technique (originated from Java) where hot wax is used as a resist on cloth. Participants will learn 3 different wax applications including the use of traditional tools and more contemporary methods. They will use pure beeswax, paraffin wax and fabric dyes to create images, design and pattern on fabric 100% cotton. The two days will allow for more layers of the process, working with up to 5 colours and it will be possible to include other techniques for example etching into wax.

Participants will learn about basic processes, pulp making, suitable materials and the use of plant fibre linters. Inclusions and decorative methods are also covered.

Included are three dimensional/sculptural processes using paper making methods and materials – with an experimental approach. Ideal for those who previously participated in any of the Paper Making Day workshops – this course takes basics techniques further and offers guidance and advice. Bring your own questions, previous works, ideas!
